A schedule is a document listing the items or elements of work required on a project, usually set out in a table that can be priced, checked or used for ordering.
Schedules appear throughout construction documentation. A schedule of rates lists unit rates without firm quantities, a schedule of works describes the work to be done and is common on refurbishment and repair projects, and design schedules, such as door or finishes schedules, record individual items. In UK practice the time plan for the works is normally called the programme, although “schedule” is used in that sense in US practice and in some planning software. When working with schedules, a QS should check:
- whether the schedule is a contract document and where it sits in the order of precedence
- whether quantities are firm, approximate or not given at all
- that it is consistent with the drawings and specification
Related terms: schedule of rates, schedule of works, programme, bill of quantities.
