Design studies are detailed studies that develop particular aspects of the building or built asset further during RIBA Stage 3 (Spatial Coordination).

At Stage 3 the architectural concept is tested and coordinated with the structural and building services designs. Design studies are used to resolve particular issues, such as the layout of key spaces, facade options, structural grids or plant space, before the design is fixed. For the QS, design studies often generate cost exercises, as each option needs to be priced and its effect on the cost plan reported, so that the client can take decisions with a clear view of cost as well as design quality.
