Battens are lengths of timber, usually sawn softwood, fixed horizontally across the rafters to provide fixing points for roof tiles or slates. Battens are also used more widely to create fixing grounds or cavities for cladding, linings and boarding.

On a pitched roof the battens are typically fixed over the underlay or breathable membrane, with their spacing (the gauge) set by the tile or slate being used. Counter battens may be fixed down the slope first to create a ventilated space or to accommodate insulation above the rafters. Tile battens in the UK are generally specified to be graded in accordance with BS 5534.
