An Application for Payment (AFP) is a request by a contractor or subcontractor for an interim or final payment, setting out the sum it considers due for the work carried out and materials supplied up to a given date.
On UK projects an AFP is usually submitted monthly, or at the intervals stated in the contract, and is supported by a valuation of work done, variations, materials on site and any other sums the contract allows. The payer’s QS reviews it and the sum actually due is confirmed through the payment notice process required by the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996, as amended. Under NEC4 the Contractor submits an application before each assessment date and the Project Manager assesses the amount due.
- Check the timing rules carefully: a late or missing application can delay payment.
- An AFP is the applicant’s view of the sum due, not the certified amount.
