Building Information Modelling (BIM) is the process of creating and managing a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a built asset, so that information can be shared and relied on throughout its life.

BIM is more than a 3D model. It is a structured way of producing, sharing and managing information between the client, design team, contractor and operator. In the UK, information management using BIM is set out in the BS EN ISO 19650 series. For the QS, a well structured model can support quantity take off, faster cost checking of design changes and better data for whole life costing and asset management.
