A fascia board is the vertical board fixed along the ends of the rafters or trusses at the eaves, where the roof meets the external wall. It finishes the roof edge, carries the gutter and often supports the lower edge of the roofing underlay and the bottom course of tiles.
Fascias were traditionally made from painted timber, but uPVC is now common on housing because it needs little maintenance, while metal fascias are often used on commercial buildings. The fascia usually works together with the soffit beneath it, and either may include ventilation to the roof space. For the QS, fascias are normally measured as linear items, stating the material, size and finish, and may be combined with the soffit and gutter as a single eaves item. On refurbishment work, check whether the timber behind any existing cladding is sound before pricing a simple overboarding or replacement.
